Though some Indonesians might still think there’s nothing wrong by using it nor it has any negative meaning whatsoever, but i found it quite derogatory and it is to some extent reducing people to certain label, thus I don’t see any reasons why we have to keep ourselves trapped in such segregation as we may all know that we inherited this word from colonial regime to differentiate ‘us’ and ‘them’. So, i think it is time for us to liberate ourselves from this ‘thinking-as-usual’ attitude and be more aware of it.

Another thing cheap in Indonesia is the cinema, Sam and his friends are so happy because with pay the same amount of AUD 14 they get first class cinema here “Premiere”.

That’s why expatriate with dollar pay check are so happy living in Indonesia and not to mention about the cheap domestic manpower here

Before moving down to Melb last nov, I have been living in Sydney for more than 4 years and just loved it.

There are indeed good and bad things about Indonesia. Likewise some bad aspects can also be found in foreign lands. Sense of community in Australia, and perhaps Scotland may not as big as Indonesia. After 6.00 pm, you can hardly see some people hanging out in front of their house. Popping in at anytime is not a rule here in Australia. You have to make appointment first. On the contrary, you can knock on your neighbour’s door anytime and put the kettle on while having conversation about soapies or obnoxious neighbour.

Most Indonesian, who’ve never been overseas, think that we can easily pile up money there. This notion does not only belong to Indonesians but some migrants from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and so on.

Although we earn just at the avarage national income level, the money seems to be alot if we spend it in Indonesia.

What i really miss from Indonesia is to have some food in warung pinggir jalan (pecel lele, soto, somay) and have a chat with tukang ojek, supir bajaj and so on.

I forgot about it! You’re absolutely right, that every where is so quiet compare to Indonesia. I remember when driving from Aberdeen to Inverness with my husband and I was so horrified to see no one. My friends actually always ask me when I send pictures from Scotland: “What time did you take those pictures?” and “Why is it so quiet, where is everybody?” My husband, on the other hand, always tells stories how amazed he found out that even in the middle of nowhere in China, suddenly there are heads popping out of rice fields.

It’s always funny to see one thing from different point of view. I’m sure I’d found another funny story to tell
