I don't see any problem with Malaysia claiming all that. As far as I know, both countries came from the same root. That's why we need not to forget our history.

Sadithya: I have written about Malaysia's claim on my previous post. Making sure they don't steal our heritage is one thing. But it also doesn't help our tourism industry, as we have done practically nothing to counter act this. We don't have a nice website like theirs, our TV commercial is never aired anywhere, and what people hear about Indonesia usually are bad things.

Woelank: I have written about my fear of the extinct of Indonesian language <a href="http://finally-woken.com/2009/01/the-end-of-indonesian-language/" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

Well, aside of all the talks about malaysia claiming a lot of Indonesia Heritage.
I also concern about our tribe language.
It seems that tribe language were seen like "out of date thingy (kampungan)", when a lot of youngster now prefer to make new wierd slang language or studying foreign language and brag about it in every daily conversation.

I just hope that in the future generation, our grandchild grandchild doesn't have to go all the way to Suriname just to learn javanese language. Or maybe go to the national museum for seeing some old manuscript of long lost forgotten tribe language.

Sigh...

Hello, I'm a newbie on your blog. Accidentally found it and just now I have read some of your posts. I like your blog. Interesting to read and I get something out of it-unlike any other blog hee hee.
I'm surprised to read this post particularly (well of course, everybody apparently is discussing this topic right now), because I never thought Scotland's kilt (and other symbolic icons as you've explained) is from Ireland. I think that's the problem being neighboring country, always an argument which is which. As for Malaysia, I can't say I respect them, but as one of my friend said, "We sometimes need an external component to unite us." And I agree, instead of focusing our hatred against Malaysia, we need to pay more attention and do something with our legacy. I read one of indonesian blog, the author said, "They can't claim it to be theirs, they only see our potential culture and USE it as they have long suffered a cultural crisis." If I may brag (not in snob way, I mean) we should be very proud, we have so many potentials. And even if Malaysia claim or use it as theirs, still doesn't change the fact that it is OURS, truly ours, forever. Because everyone in all countries will know -if they're curious enough to read the history- the original root.

Hm, I guess my 2 cents aren't 2 cents at all. Maaf kepanjangan ya, Mbak. :)
And now, I'll subscribe to your blog.
