I love the title of this blog post! I definitely think Perthites' friendliness is all thanks to the awesome weather here. I'm from Seattle - a city where it rains almost constantly in winter - and people actually have to go to "light therapy" sessions (basically tanning salons as far as I can tell) to feel balanced emotionally.
Isn't it great too how just one friendly exchange can brighten your day and inspire you to brighten someone else's?
I've been keeping a blog about everything else I love about Perth. Check it out: www.whatssogreataboutperth.wordpress.com

Tere616: yes, the master-slave mentality in our country is quite strong. It's a shame because if all the sales staffs are equipped with vast knowledge about marketing and the products they sell, they'd be terrific sales people!

Renee: exactly! I'm still in awe with how friendly Perthians are, until now. Yesterday I ordered a taxi for a friend who was about to go to the airport but then canceled it since she was picked up by another friend. Alas, the taxi came and when I explained that I'd canceled it 2 hours earlier, the driver, without losing the smile from his face, just said it's fine, no problem, it's their messed up system. I felt really guilty and kept saying sorry, but he just smiled, said goodbye, and drove off without any single complaint. I can't imagine if this would happen in Sydney, or London, or NY! I've visited your blog, by the way, very cool!

Maureen: Thanks. I am enjoying it, although just like everywhere else I could complain about some stuff and praise about other stuff as well;)

Jean: absolutely. I never believed the power of smiles until now!

Your post reminds me so much of the southern hospitality back in Alabama where everybody at least say "Hi, how are you?" and actually meant it not just 'basa-basi'. Whereas in Northern part of the States such as in New York people are more timid with strangers. It is nice to know that you are enjoying your new adventure in Perth. :)

Indonesia compare to other Asian country, is much better in terms of "genuine and meaningfull smile", even though not all of them give you the meaningfull smile, but we still can find that smile especially when you're in Bali or other village.

I think the reason because of the mind set, of how they see the customer as their master instead of human being, maybe ..

Well...nice to know that you find a happy and cheerfull Perthians, hope it will stays long ... :-)
