Questions on Comments and Blogwalking

Today has been a very busy day. And although I was able to read most emails through my iphone, I couldn’t check my blog(s) until 10 PM tonight. By the time I opened this blog, I had lots of comments to responds to. And since Monday is my ‘major blogwalking’ day, which means I visit all blogs in my blogroll to check the updates (few of them are updated frequently – I visit them more often – but some are only updated once in a week, if that, and that’s why I do whole blogwalking on one day just to make sure I don’t miss any of my blogger friends’ blog updates), I had to stay a bit longer than usual.

Anyway, back to my somewhat overwhelming comments, it’s almost midnight and I just finished responding all comments. Which left me wondering, and I hope you don’t mind answering my questions:

  • How often do you check your blog (to see if someone leaves comment on the post or on the shoutbox, or to check if your stat or technorati rank is increasing, to see who just visited by checking your mybloglog or blogcatalog, etc).
  • Do you wait until you get more many comments on your entry or you respond each comment directly?
  • How often do you blogwalking?
  • Do you blogwalk to each of blog on your blogroll? My blogroll isn’t that big (less than 100 blogs listed there) and it’s already time consuming. But some bloggers can have thousands of blogs listed on their blogroll. That’s why I am wondering.
  • How do you keep tracking on other bloggers’ blog? Do you subscribe their RSS readers or do you prefer to visit their blogs directly?
  • Do you always leave comment on each new post? If not, why?
  • When you leave comment(s), do you go back again sometime later to see if the blog owner has responded? How important is it to have your comment responded?

Hope my questions can trigger some interesting discussion. Beddy time now!

Cheerio!

  1. Uhm… try to answer your questions:
    1) I check my blog everyday so I can approve the comments (if any). But I check technorati rank, mybloglog or blog catalog occasionally (rarely)

    2) Depends on timing and my mood though, if I have more time to respond one comment then I’ll do it but if I don’t have much time (due to my workload) and not in the mood then I’ll wait till more comments to come.

    3) Try to do it everyday for 30 minutes in the morning, 1 hours during lunch break (I rarely lunch out) and 30 minutes – 1 hours after office hour when the work load start to slow down.

    4) I blogwalk to each blog in my blogroll when I don’t have work to do, but I always blogwalk at least 10 of the list and that include yours

    5) I prefer to visit the blog directly

    6) Depends on the topic though. Sometimes just read the posting is enough for me.

    7. Yeah, sometimes I go back to check the blog owner’s responses but not always..

  2. 1) Daily when I was on my “kosn”.. but I never did it when I was home.. Got no connection here.. πŸ˜›
    2) Until 5 or 6 comments.. I’m too lazy…
    3) Just an hour.. then bye bye…
    4) Maybe about 5 to 10 blogs…
    5) RSS !!!
    6) Depends on the topic…
    7) Not really…

  3. Hi, rather than make you a list here are a few observations.
I spend 2/3 hours a day at my computer which displays my page rank in the toolbar and my Alexa Stats on the task bar. I also visit blog directories where I have subscriptions from time to time (mainly to check the link/account). I always respond to comments promptly, after all if someone has taken the time in the first place then I like to show that I value their support. I assume by blogwalking you mean checking out other blogs-I do it every day-there is so much good content out there. I keep track of things by using RSS feeds and other gadgets offered by Blogger. So I always know when a blog I am interested in updates.
As for checking for replies to comments I left, this is a real pain, perhaps you can recommend a widget or something that pulls comments together because I like to see what the author thinks, after all its a conversation of sorts.

  4. Hello. I tend to go online almost everytime I nurse my baby during the day. So yes, I blogwalk often. This probably will be unlikely next year when I start working for money again though :).

I don’t like RSS feed. Have got too much emails in my inbox already. Blogwalking is way better.

Technorati… I was meant to check it out but up to today I still don’t know what is for. Care to enlighthen me Anita? :) I have a sitemeter account but I forgot the password. Typical.

I love getting comments, sometimes I reply as soon as I can, sometimes I’ll wait for a bit for others.

  5. Ecky & Topique: thanks for answering. Maybe I should adjust my method, I take way too long time to blogwalking and commenting!

Mike: thanks for dropping by. Well you can always ask to be notified my email if your comment gets a respond, right? But to me it’s not the same, I like to visit each blog and being nosy, reading whatever content they have, including the shoutbox, pagerank, and other people’s stats.

Katadia: Well I’m not that tech savvy but here is the wikipedia’s definition about technorati. Basically they index our blogs and determine how ‘popular’ we are by counting how many blogs link to us.

  6. I blogwalk whenever I want heheh. Means between taking care of my kids, writing serious things, etc. I can also have blogwalk-strike at anytime. I usually reply to 2-3 comments at a time, but I alwaysl give one-on-one reply.
I love to check if my comment on a blog is replied … that’s when you see me on your meter checking your blog 2-3 times per day LOL. I don’t care about stat, technorati, etc … I’m happy with the way my blog is … I will be very restless with those stat etc to know who’s visiting, etc .. so I’m avoiding those things.

  7. Ok, here goes my answers…

    1. I check my blog for new comments every now and then but I don’t often check my sitemeter or mybloglog for new visitors.

    2. Depends on my mood as well, but I usually wait until there are more comments :)

    3. When I check my blog I usually check other blogs that are on my fave list. Yours included!

    4. No. Because if I do I will never get any work done LOL.

    5. I don’t keep track. I have an account with Google Reader but I don’t think RSS is my thing. I prefer to visit the blog directly and read the post from there.

    6. Not always. Depends on the topic of the post, if it’s a heavy one I leave it for later but if it’s a funny and humourous one I usually comment straight away.

    7. Yep. I like to know that the blog owner appreciates the comments he/she receives by responding to mine. When they don’t respond I tend to stop visiting πŸ˜›

  8. 1. I check my blog daily and blogwalk at the same time. I don’t care about rank, site meter etc…but I’d like to know where my visitors come from as appear on my feedjit. Some people come to my blog after they google info for martabak manis, perkedel jagung, telor balado…hehehe!

    2. Usually after 2 or 3 comments.

    3. I blogwalk once or twice a day. I am currently more into flickr-walk and try to post a new picture everyday and join several flickr groups.

    4. Yeah, I mostly blogwalk from my blogrolls. Sometimes I visit another blogs too.

    5. I don’t keep track (I dont even know how to do it..not important for me). I just visit the blog directly and in random.

    6. I try to post comment whenever I visit someone else’s blog.

    7. Comments are like inter-active conversation but with interval as the blog owner may not be online by the time we respond to their posts.

  9. 1. Daily, only to moderate incoming comments.
    2. I do this twice a week.
    3. I do blogwalking also twice a week.
    4. I visit every blog on my blogroll.
    5. I keep tracking by visiting each blog on my blogroll, I’m not really a big fan of RSS readers.
    6. No, cause my comment must contribute to the subject of the post
    7. I’ll check whether my comments are responded. To my opinion it is a kind of etiquette as a blog owner to respond on all incoming comments, even with just a smiley. This shows that the blog owner does maintain his/her blog (which you do Nit, by the way)

  10. I don’t do blogwalking unless there’s a certain post that I want to comment on. I have all my favourite blogs in my Google Reader and it’s easier to read that way. Save a lot of time!

  11. Santi: so you deliberately avoid those site meters? You’re right, they make you restless. When I just moved to this new address I wasn’t happy to see my pagerank was zero. Maybe I should worry less then πŸ˜›

Therry: just by looking at the list of top commentators in my blog, people know already that you’re my stalker LOL.

Elyani: yes isn’t it wonderful? Up until now the post that attracts many visitors is my Tantrum Injury post. I don’t know, maybe because there’s a word ‘massage’ on it and they expect a porn post…

Lorraine: apparently not many people are big fans of RSS. Hmm….

The Writer: you’re one of the few who uses Google Reader. I’m more like Therry, we need our eyes stimulated by looking at the whole design of each blog. Or maybe because we’re just plain nosy πŸ˜›

  12. 1. I check my blog 2-3 times a day, and when I’m busy I usually will publish any pending comments and check it later when I want to update (or have new ideas about what to write next).

    2. It depends on whether I’m busy or not. If I’m not then I’ll respond to the comments right after, otherwise I’ll wait until they fill up a little while

    3. No, I don’t really do blogwalking. I have all my fave blogs in Google Reader. I only visit other people’s website when I want to leave a comment on some posts

    4. Answered already

    5. Depends whether they’re interesting or not. I get lazy to leave a new comment on a site whose owner hardly reply. That’s a bit sad. The blog owner should be actively response all the incoming comments, at least that’s how they appreciate the guests.

    6. Yes I do.

  15. 1. hmm around 5 times a day. lolz.
    2. i tend to respond the comments whenever i see them.
    3. around twice a week
    4. i have only a few, so yes, i blogwalk to half of those in my blogroll. but the other half don’t get updated very regularly, which is why i no longer visit them.
    5. i prefer to visit them directly.
    6. nah, i rarely comment.. hehe bcoz i’m a bit lazy to type etc etc. it is also time-consuming (and money-consuming) for my home internet connection to type a comment while i’m opening them.
    7. sometimes. I don’t consider it very important to have my comments responded though :)

  16. Rob: judging by the number of entries you post everyday I guess it’s safe to say that you’re a blog addict, BIG TIME!

Toshi: aha! so you’re as obsessed as me then LOL

  17. I’d love to share too :)

    1. Almost everyday, but basically every time I get on-line I will always check my blog as well as the comments and shoutbox. On the other hand, I rarely open my Technorati rank, mybloglog etc. Don’t really give a damn, LOL.
    2. Not necessarily. Sometimes I don’t even respond them.
    3. Along with checking my blog.
    4. Yes I do.
    5. I prefer to visit them directly.
    6. No, cos sometimes I think they don’t need a respond or simply have no idea what to say.
    7. Sometimes. I’d love to hear from the author but not that demanding.

  18. *How often do you check your blog (to see if someone leaves comment on the post or on the shoutbox, or to check if your stat or technorati rank is increasing, to see who just visited by checking your mybloglog or blogcatalog, etc).
I usually check mine once or twice a day. I usually don’t check mybloglog and technorati rank since they are unimportant for me.

*Do you wait until you get more many comments on your entry or you respond each comment directly?
I usually wait until I got around 5 comments to give response.

    *How often do you blogwalking?
Yes I’m just an university student, but I do have a hectic schedule. I blogwalk once in two or three days.

*How do you keep tracking on other bloggers’ blog? Do you subscribe their RSS readers or do you prefer to visit their blogs directly?
Use bloglines and you don’t need to check each blog in your blogroll, I found it very effective. If they have interesting articles I will leave comments.

  19. i blogwalk a looot less now. as you may have observed, probably πŸ˜€

it’s funny i think when i was a student i have just as much to read or even more as i have now. but back then, blogging was so interesting and now reading books/browsing/hanging out with friends are more interesting. i think to me, blogging addiction was a phase and i kinda done with it. but now i’m still blogging and blog walking once in a while.
